Syllabus and Examination Information

This Wolsey Hall course is designed to prepare you for the Cambridge IGCSE Latin 0480 examination which you will sit at a Cambridge exam centre.

It is vitally important that you become familiar with the syllabus which can be found here.

In your exam, you will sit two papers:

  • Paper 1 Language (1 hour 30 minutes) 160 marks weighted at 50% of total marks available.

There are two sections in this paper. In Section A, candidates translate a passage of Latin prose into English. In Section B, candidates answer comprehension questions on a passage of Latin prose. In the comprehension section of Paper 1 you will be asked to give some English words that are derived from Latin words. This is something that is now common across all Latin examinations. To prepare for this, it would be helpful to think about English words as you learn vocabulary. For example, from scribo (I write) we get scribe/prescription/scribble; from civis (citizen), we get civic/civilian; from miles (soldier) we get military.

  • Paper 2 Literature (1 hour 30 minutes) 80 marks weighted at 50% of total marks available

Candidates answer questions on the prescribed texts. Questions test comprehension, translation, scansion and appreciation of the literature. Please note that the literature set texts in Paper 2 changed in 2020. This will not affect the way you learn the language, but you will find that the past literature papers on Canvas have questions on different passages. They can still be useful to look at, however, as you can see the type of question that is asked.
