Module One

Module One is all about beginnings! We all know that the study of Ancient History takes us deep into the past, but when does it begin? In this module you will look at this question of origin by exploring theories about how our earliest ancestors migrated around the globe. You will learn how history and archaeology are conducted, as well as how to use a range of historical sources, and you will consider the importance of ancient sites.  Do not worry if you have not studied history before because this first module will introduce you to the key skills, concepts and terms that are used in historical investigation.

You should work through each topic, reading the relevant pages in the digital coursebook and completing the activities. We are aware that there is a lot of new information for you to absorb so take your time to fully understand everything!

After you have worked through the coursebook material, you will find there are some optional activities designed to provide support and extension:

  • The support activities are suggested to help you consolidate your learning, and give you more time to process the information, sometimes approaching it from different angles or using different skills.
  • The extension activities are designed to give opportunities to expand and enrich your learning, whether by developing your knowledge, engaging with what you do know more deeply, applying your research skills or pursuing a creative project inspired by the material you have been studying.

You do not have to complete all of these activities but we hope you might choose one or two each time.

When you have finished working through the topics, there is a quiz for you to complete. You can retake the quiz as many times as you like. When you have achieved a score of over 50% in the quiz, Assignment One will become unlocked for you to complete.

Do not forget that after your tutor has marked your assignment, a mark scheme will be available for you to view. Aim to study this carefully as it will be very helpful for your next assignment.
