- explain the terms: rocks, minerals, crystal, granite, quartz, feldspar, sandstone, limestone, calcite, chalk, rock-building minerals, crust, concrete, cement, aggregate, metal ores, gem stones;
- say when Earth’s rock first formed;
- explain what minerals are, and name the most common rock-building minerals;
- give three ways that the building industry uses rock;
- explain what a metal ore is.
Introduction
In this first topic you will learn about what rock is, what it is made of, and what we use it for.

- Complete all the ‘Your Turn’ activities on page 7.
- Rocks are everywhere and are vital to our daily lives, but we rarely think about them! This topic will certainly help you think about them more. For ‘Your Turn’ question 8, try to be as dramatic and creative as you can!
- Rocks can also be beautiful. Do an internet search for ‘Close up minerals in rocks’. How many different shapes, colours and patterns can you identify?
- Why not take a walk around your local area and take photos of any rocks you see? Use them to create an annotated sketch map of the area.
