Topic Two (1.2): What are the three rock groups?
Objectives for this topic
By the end of this topic you should be able to:
- explain the terms: sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock, igneous rock, mudstone, sandstone, limestone, magma, lava, granite, basalt, slate, tuff;
- describe how the rocks in each of the three groups are formed, and name at least one rock in each group;
- say what is similar, and what is different, about granite and basalt;
- explain the connection between mudstone and slate;
- say that over half the rock (65%) in the Earth’s crust is igneous rock, only 8% is sedimentary rock but it forms a layer over most of the Earth’s surface.
Introduction
In this topic you will learn about the three rock groups - sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic - as well as how the rocks in each group are formed and their relative percentages in the Earth’s crust.
