Introduction
In this topic, you will learn how to count all the way up to 20 in German. You will also discover one of the most important verbs in the German language: the verb sein, which means ‘to be’.
Working through your coursebook
Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:
- Complete exercise 1 on page 12: listen to the audio and repeat the numbers aloud.

Extra: try using your fingers when saying the numbers out loud
- Complete exercise 2 on page 12: fill in the numbers for each sentence
- Complete exercise 3 on page 12: listen to the audio and write down the age of each item.

- Complete exercise 4 on page 13: make dialogues with the information provided.
Extra: for more fun, why not speak with two different voices and record your dialogues? You could also act it out using teddy bears, for example, and film it!
- Complete exercises 5 and 6 on page 13: listen to the audio and note down which forms of the verb ‘sein’ you hear in the Rap song.

- Complete exercise 7 on page 13: listen to the audio and note their age and how they are feeling.

- Read the ‘strategy’ box on page 13, then complete exercise 8 on page 13: translate the conversation into English.
Review
- Write down the names and ages of yourself and five of your friends or family. Make sure that you write the numbers out in full and take care to use the correct form of sein (corresponding with the pronoun you use – ich, er or sie).
