Module One
WAS THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES FAIR?
Introduction
World War I saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. By the time the war ended, in November 1918, it has been estimated that there were more than 80 million deaths and casualties. The last shot was fired in Europe on 11th November 1918. The last shot fired in Africa was on 23rd November 1918.
The biggest question on fairness of the Treaty of Versailles stems from whether Germany should be blamed for starting WW1. This is one of the questions you will have to think carefully about as you take your course notes.
Remember to make sure you have carefully read the introduction modules of your course as this will help you with note taking, retrieval practice techniques, tackling examination questions and syllabus material.
The coursebook you have should be Cambridge IGCSE and O Level History Option B: The 20th Century (Third Edition, Ben Walsh and Benjamin Harrison, ISBN: 978-1-3983-7505-5) Check carefully that you have the third edition of the coursebook. If not, contact your SPM and let them know.
Page 5 of this coursebook gives a very good overview of what you are expected to study over the course of the module. Take the time to read this carefully.
The HA also includes an excellent podcast on the state of Europe after WW1. Please have a listen to it.
