Introduction

In this topic, you will read and listen to a text called To Give by Vimal Shinagadia.

Working through your coursebook

Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:

  • Page 36, Exercise 1 – Read and listen to the first part of the story. There is a very helpful vocabulary box on the page (and also on page 37) so try to read this first to ensure that you understand what the key words mean.  As you listen, try to think if the story is based on real events or if it is a fable (a traditional story that teaches a moral lesson). Why?

LISTEN – Track 08

  • Pages 36 and 37, Exercises 3-7 – Read the questions then answer them carefully.
  • There will undoubtedly be words in this text that are new to you and that you do not understand. Make sure that you look up the meaning of these words then write them down. Try to learn how they are pronounced - you can check the correct pronunciation by listening to the audio again.
  • Page 38, Exercise 7 - Answer questions a-c carefully.
  • Page 38, Exercise 8 - Now choose one of the scenes and imagine what the people in the story said to each other.  Write a short dialogue.
