Topic One (1.1): Introduction to Prose

Introduction to Prose – Unit 7 pp.64-68

Welcome to the first module of your IGCSE English Literature course. We hope that you’ll enjoy the pieces you’re about to study and that by the end of Module Nine you’ll not only have developed and improved your analytical and writing skills, but you will also have been introduced to some texts that will stay with you for many years to come.

We’re going to kick off with prose. You will answer a prose question on Paper 1 for your set text, The War of the Worlds, and you will have the option of answering a question on an unseen prose extract for Paper 4.

Read

First, let’s revise what prose fiction is by reading ‘Introducing Prose’ on pp.64-69.

 Interact

When you’ve read that, do the activities on Worksheet 7.1: What is prose? (which looks at the differences between poetry and prose) and Worksheet 8.1 (which does the same for drama and prose).

When you’ve read and understood that unit, you can move on to Topic Two, which starts to break down prose fiction into its constituent parts.
