A Closer Look at Essay Technique – Unit 17 pp.172-180

This topic focuses on the process of writing literature essays and gives you examples of successful and less successful essays. Like Topic Six, it will help you with all your essays throughout the Literature course.

Read ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ by Wilfred Owen on pp.173-174, and then read the demonstration of the process of writing an essay about the poem on pp.174-176. (The process of writing about this poem will help you write about all genres of literature, including the novel.)

Read the two example essays on pp.177-179 and the teachers’ comments in the margins and at the end of each essay. What mark would you give each essay, and why?

Make sure you refer to ‘Check Your Progress’ on p.180, so that you are confident you have completed all of the tasks.
