Topic One (1.1): My language, your language
Objectives for this topic
- to talk about languages and learning language;
- to ask questions using language words.
Introduction
In this topic, you will learn about four young people and the languages they speak.
Working through your coursebook
Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:
- Page 12 – How many languages can you think of? How many different languages do people you know speak? What are they?
- Page 12, Exercise 1 – On your own or with an adult or friend talk about languages you know and would like to learn. Finish the sentences.
- Page 12, Exercise 2 – Read the Language tip box to make sure you understand the meaning of ‘bilingual’ and ‘official language’. Look at the words in the box in Exercise 2. Which are nationalities? Which are languages? Which are both? They all start with a capital letter. This is because both nationalities and languages are proper nouns.
- Page 12, Exercise 3 – Look at the pictures of the people on page 13. You are going to listen to them telling you about the languages they speak. Copy the chart into your notebook and then complete the information for each phrase.

- Page 13, Exercise 4 – Read the Use of English box: Question words 1, then complete the questions in Exercise 4.
- Page 13, Exercise 5 – Listen to Track 02 and answer the questions in Exercise 4.

- Page 13, Exercise 6 – Read the Use of English box: Question words 2, then complete the questions in Exercise 6.
- Page 13, Exercise 7 – Listen again to Track 02 and answer the questions in Exercise 6.
Review
- If you have friends or family who speak different languages, ask them questions about the languages they speak. Use the questions in Exercises 4 and 6 to help you. Write down your questions and their answers.

Extension activity for this topic
- There are nearly 200 countries in the world. It’s good to know the names of some of the larger, more important countries. Can you say where China is positioned on Earth, or where on the globe is India? We can’t cover every country here. All countries are important, but some are much larger than others.
