Objectives
By the end of this topic you should be able to:
- describe the components of a healthy diet
- explain the role of each nutrient in the body.
You might also be able to:
- interpret nutritional information on food packaging to identify a healthy food.
Introduction
In this first topic, you will find out about the make up of a balanced diet and about why a balanced diet is important.

- Read pages 24–25 of your textbook.

- Keep a food diary for a week. Is your diet healthy? How could you improve it? Make sure that you can list the seven food groups and explain their functions within the body.
