We will start Year 7 by looking at some written methods of multiplying. You may have already used the grid method to multiply, but we are now going to also look at column multiplication.

First complete the skill checker on page 83, using column addition to answer questions 1, 3b and 3d.

Please note, the method of column multiplication uses the Year 6 method of column addition.

If you have forgotten how to do this, it is really important that you revisit this topic before continuing with today’s lesson.

  • Read and make notes on pages 83 and 84, copying out the worked examples on page 83 (finding the product of 40 and 30) and on page 84 (working out 123 x 26),  if you think it will help you. (Don’t worry about the division work, we shall study that next lesson).
  • Now see if you can answer the Band 2, questions 7-9 and 11 on page 87.
