Assignments And Video Calls
Assignments
To access the assignment for a module, you will need to have studied each topic page in the module and uploaded all of the Topic Check-ins. You will also need to have submitted and received a grade for the previous module's assignment (except Module Zero which does not have an assignment).
We set these prerequisites so that you work through the course at the recommended pace and do not skip ahead to the assignment until you've worked through all of the topics in a module and done all of the necessary experimental work to ensure you have a good grasp of the technical skills required.
The assignments are the means by which you gradually compile your ePortfolio (Component 1 personal portfolio). As you cover the topics in each module, you are then required to check over the practical artwork you have done and select the most appropriate pieces to upload for your ePortfolio.
You will photograph the selected pieces of work and upload these into a Canva template [not available with sample course], where you can arrange these photographs to best show the work that you have done for this module. Once you are happy with the arrangement, you will then export this as a pdf and upload this to Canvas as your assignment for that module.
The assignments allow you to think critically about what you have learned and will enable your tutor to see how well you are progressing. You have an opportunity on the assignment header sheet to write comments and questions for your tutor, who will answer these in their feedback on your assignment. If you don’t do well in your first assignment - don’t worry, your tutor is there to provide advice.
Assignment Grades
All course assignments are graded using the Pearson GCSE Marking Grid from the start. The four assessment objectives are each marked out of six. A maximum mark of six for one of the objectives means that the student will have reached an exceptional level. This will be expected towards the end of the course, but not at the start due to the limited number of pieces produced. This will mean that your first assignment grade will be very much a starting point.
Your tutor will mark your assignments and provide you with detailed feedback. Your marks will be awarded based on how competently you have addressed each of the four assessment objectives in your assignment. The competencies are detailed on your assignment header sheet, to help you understand the grade that you receive, and also in the Marking Grid (above). As you reflect carefully on your tutor’s feedback and apply it in your future assignments, your grade profile will rise.
We ask that you do not submit multiple assignments at the same time. It is very important that you reflect on your tutor’s feedback before beginning each new assignment, so that you can incorporate their tips for improvement into each new piece of work.
All assignments are submitted via Canvas – you should consult the Canvas Guide for more information.
Video Calls With Your Tutor
You will have three video calls with your tutor in each of the two years of this Art and Design course. In year one, you begin with a welcome call after Module Zero which gives you a chance to meet your tutor face to face and to introduce yourself – this is a really important part of the Wolsey Hall system as it is key to your enjoyment and progress that you establish a good relationship with your tutor. They will be a great source of advice, instruction, support and encouragement, so please take every opportunity that is offered to meet up with them!
Year One
- Welcome call after Module Zero – your tutor will go through your results on the Module Zero quiz with you in this call and you will need to bring two or three examples of some artwork you have done recently to show your tutor.
- Review call after Module Three – your tutor will review your progress on your ePortfolio and answer any queries you might have .
- Review call after Module Six – your tutor will go through your mock exam results and check your progress on your ePortfolio.
Year Two
Due to the nature of the exam schedule in this second year of the course, these calls are arranged around the exam submissions calendar.
- Review call after Module Eight (December) – your tutor will review your progress to date on your ePortfolio as you will now pause work on this in order to focus on Component 2 (theme released on 2nd Jan)
- Review call after Module Nine (March) – review of your Component Two preparatory work, which must now be uploaded as pdfs and which cannot be altered after this date.
- Review call after Module Eleven (early April) – your tutor’s final opportunity to review your ePortfolio work and give feedback ahead of its submission (along with Component 2) by 31st May.
